A Nightmare

A Nightmare

Eyes flash open.
You’re met by darkness.
What is it?
Where is it?
You strain your ears, but there is nothing other than the sounds of the night,
And somewhere someone’s softly snoring.
Padded feet go to see;
To reassure that all is safe,
Because within the chains of slumber you were tortured by all that could be;
And the whims of your imagination.
But I am here.
I am safe.
Yet the claws of this nightmare remain embedded within your mind.
Your heart beats fast,
Your breath escapes in gasps,
And so you sit there all through the night,
And cannot rest until morning’s light.
