Hidden Pockets of Splendor

Hidden Pockets of Splendor

You book your vacation.
You arrive at this pristine natural wonder—
All hidden away;
Concealed within a hidden fold,
Concealed within the earth’s secret pockets.
How beautiful!
How wonderous!
Don’t you wish that these pristine wonders would extend far across the surface of the earth,
And that such beauty would lavishly drape over its barren bones?
It did…
Once…

Once upon a time the earth was gilded with natural splendors that far surpassed anything we know now;
From deep oceans,
To vast deserts,
To lofty mountains,
To vibrant forests;
But no more.
We came.
Humans.
We polluted the oceans.
We defiled the deserts.
We whittled away the mountains.
We razed the forests.
Through our greed we have refashioned the earth to our will.
We have laid our concrete,
We have built our subdivisions, our shops, and our cities,
And now what you see is all that is left;
Hidden Pockets of splendor within a world that is no longer beautiful;
All because of us.
